On 21 July 2017, the Maritime Singapore Connect (MSC) Office held its second run of the MSC Maritime Insights Forum. This event is specially organised for Education and Career Guidance (ECG) counsellors, to provide them with information on the various education and career pathways into and within the maritime industry, so that they may be well-equipped to share this in their work with students and jobseekers.
This year, the MSC Office collaborated with the Ministry of Education (MOE) Guidance Branch in their initiative for counsellors, thereby extending the reach of participants. The programme kicked off with a guided bus tour of Jurong Port, to help ECG counsellors gain a better understanding of the importance and wide variety of cargo and operations in the port. Following that, the ECG counsellors were ferried down by bus to Raffles Marina, where they enjoyed a short tea break followed by an “Overview of Maritime Singapore” presentation from the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, and “Gateways to Maritime” presentation on education and career pathways from the MSC Office, Singapore Maritime Foundation.
Guests then heard from panellists from different maritime fields and stages in their careers in MSC Conversations, to gain insight on their jobs and why they loved it. The panellists were – Captain Mohd Salleh, Director, Singapore Maritime Academy and Singapore Maritime Foundation Advisory Panel member; Ms Stephanie Ng, Senior Manager, Commercial, Jurong Port; Mr Jarrod Ho, Shipbroker, Projects, Eastport Shipping Pte Ltd; and Ms Toh Sze Yi, Deck Cadet, Pacific International Lines Pte Ltd.
The MSC Maritime Insights Forum concluded with a networking buffet lunch, where our partners from the government agencies, maritime courses in schools and the industry, such as the Singapore Maritime Ambassadors, were also present to talk to and answer the questions of the ECG counsellors.
