According to a recent survey, about three quarters of the shipping companies, liner or tramp, are using, to a different extent, slow-steaming in their services. As slow-steaming does save cost and reduce emissions and as it seems that even most shippers have more or less accepted the practice, some people have begun to advocate that slow-steaming would be a normal way of ship operation for the future, though some others disagree and consider it as merely a temporary solution of the shipping companies. As a matter of fact, slow-steaming is quite a complex issue, affected by more than just the factors mentioned above and its impacts are also broader than most people generally realise. To get a more comprehensive view of this subject is therefore meaningful and necessary for a shipping company or others in related sectors with regard to their development strategies, investment decisions, operational patterns, cost structure/control and service level.
