SMF and the General Insurance Association of Singapore (GIA) held the 35th Maritime Knowledge Shipping Session on 29th June 2017. The session examined the topic of ‘China’s One Belt, One Road’ or OBOR in short and saw an overwhelming attendance of maritime professionals. Speakers invited for this session were Mr Asad Ali, Senior Analyst, Asia-Pacific of IHS Markit Country Risk and Mr Ton van den Bosch, Energy, Shipping Counsel, Singapore of Ince & Co.
SMF and GIA recognised that OBOR was a topic that was gaining global interest and momentum and guests found the session a timely event. Mr Asad Ali’s presentation focused on the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor and identified political risks brought about by huge Chinese investments. Mr Ton van den Bosch’s presentation narrowed in on ‘China’s belt and road initiative’ where he covered the geographical, economic, and legal impacts on existing ports and shipping lines with reference to the new Maritime Silk Road. The session ended with a Q&A segment with moderator Mr Rama Chandran, Head of Marine, Singapore, QBE Singapore and gave participant the chance to raise questions to the speakers which they may have.
