The Singapore Chamber of Maritime Arbitration (SCMA) and Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS) jointly organised the 2nd Legal and Commercial Perspectives seminar series.
First held in 2020, SMF Executive Director Tan Beng Tee opened the session by speaking on the shared goal of SMF, SCMA and ICS Singapore in ensuring that the maritime industry has a skilled pool of talent. This objective can be achieved through equipping industry professionals with future-ready skills.
To provide industry professionals with actionable knowledge, recently decided maritime legal cases that happened both in Singapore and England were discussed. Mr Steffen Pedersen, Partner at Penningtons Manches Cooper Singapore LLP, and Ms. Lakshmi Priya, Chartering Manager at Norvic Shipping International Ltd, first presented a case on the issue of cargos that are shipped in apparent good order and condition. Following which, Mr. Joseph Tan, Managing Director at JLex LLC, and Ms Elaine Yu, Freight Trader (Chartering) at ENGIE, brought forth their observations on the topic of contract formation. To round up the discussion, Mr. Paul Aston, a Consultant at Holman Fenwick Willan LLP, and Ms. Anupama Chauhan, Chief Operating Officer of Netbulk Pte. Ltd., spoke on how implying terms are used to give a clause business efficacy.
The session was closed by Mr. Punit Oza, Executive Director of SCMA.
