New Board Appointed at the Singapore Maritime Foundation’s New Year Cocktail Reception 2018 Officiated by Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Transport and Ministry of Health, Dr. Lam Pin Min

01 January 2018

Guest-of-Honour for the SMF New Year Cocktail Reception, Dr Lam Pin Min, was joined by over 180 maritime leaders from the public and private sectors to usher in the new year and launch the Industry Transformation Map for the sea transport sector. Maritime leaders, government officials and top industry professionals from cross-sector partnerships also gathered at Singapore’s class-leading port terminal to witness the momentous occasion and announce the appointment of the new SMF Board.

In his opening address, Mr Andreas Sohmen-Pao, Chairman of SMF, highlighted some of the Foundation’s milestones in the past year including the Maritime Outreach NEtwork (MaritimeONE) tenth year anniversary, and the successful run of Sea Asia 2017 which saw 15,000 global participants in attendance. Mr Sohmen-Pao also cited the importance of enhancing connectivity to boost Singapore’s status as the world’s leading maritime hub.

Singapore has established a strong and successful maritime cluster. To remain a leading global maritime centre, we will have to leverage connections within the cluster and with adjacent sectors to develop ideas and innovation. Achieving this connectivity, and capturing non-physical flows, will add to Singapore’s competitiveness as a hub.

This evening, three prominent leaders from the maritime law, ship broking and offshore and marine sectors were also presented with their appointments by Mr Sohmen-Pao. One such member, Mr Abu Bakar, expressed his anticipation towards being part of the SMF Board in a bid to create a more vibrant maritime ecosystem.

Students and jobseekers can always count on the industry to provide education and career opportunities. I believe that focusing our efforts in talent attraction and retention on the part of maritime education and training programmes led by SMF are some of the direct ways to reach out to youths.

He continued: “While I am honoured to have the privilege of joining the Board, I am also looking forward to providing my expertise in areas of safety, operations and the commercial aspects of the trade in offshore and marine, and ensuring the development of human capital for the next generation of maritime workforce.”

Since the Foundation’s inception in 2004, SMF has been collaborating with industry partners and institutions of higher learning (IHLs) to raise the profile of Maritime Singapore. At the reception, industry leaders from the shipping and education sectors also conveyed their thoughts on the benefits of cross-sector collaboration and the importance of expanding Singapore’s IMC through the Foundation’s outreach activities.

Shipping facilitates world trade and contributes to a significant part of Singapore’s economy. With the Foundation serving as a bridge between the private and public sectors, we have initiated activities for various clusters that are integral in building a cohesive maritime community.

“Our next aim is to establish Singapore as an international maritime finance centre for fund raising activities in both debt and equity capital markets. We will also be working towards greater knowledge sharing amongst partners to expand productivity and connectivity,” Mr. Lee added.

A key pillar of the Sea Transport ITM launched tonight is jobs and skills - I believe that building up a strong manpower pipeline through robust curriculum and close consultation with industry professionals will provide a deeper appreciation of the sector and attract the right talent to steer this industry forward.

Capt. Salleh also added: “Initiatives such as the MaritimeONE Scholarship programme and the Maritime Singapore Connect (MSC) Office are only some examples that the Foundation has created to enable awareness of the maritime sector among students and job seekers.”

In 2017, SMF developed several outreach initiatives and reached milestones on the local and global front:

  1. The fourth edition of the Singapore Maritime Services Guide was launched during the Singapore Maritime Week; a free publication that showcases the diversity of maritime ancillary services in Singapore through a directory listing of maritime companies across specialisations ranging from bunkering, law and arbitration, finance and classification societies.
  2. The MSC Office witnessed a record turnout for the inaugural Maritime Careers Workshop organised with IHL partners and launched a website that serves as a resume depository for companies to browse resumes, publicise scholarships and job openings. The site also allows students and job seekers access maritime education, feature stories, and a calendar of maritime events that are open to the public.
  3. The MaritimeONE initiative celebrated its tenth year anniversary, and the MaritimeONE Scholarship Programme saw a total of 312 scholars and $8.2 million in scholarships awarded since its inception.
  4. SMF and Seatrade organised the sixth edition of Sea Asia, the anchor maritime exhibition and conference show which drew close to 15,000 participants from 85 countries and further cemented Singapore’s role as a maritime forum in Asia.

The SMF Board comprises prominent senior personalities from the maritime industry and sets the direction for SMF’s industry promotion initiatives. In 2018, SMF aims to work with strategic partners in raising the profile of the maritime sector and attracting talents into the industry. SMF, in partnership with Seatrade, will also look to sustain discussion on Singapore’s role in LNG bunkering and address concerns of the rapidly growing energy sector through the Sea Asia LNG Shipping and Clean Energy Forum which will take place in April this year.
