Close to S$1.9 Million in Scholarships Awarded by the Singapore Maritime Industry for Local & Overseas Studies

As part of the maritime industry’s efforts to develop the pipeline of talent into the industry, the Government, maritime businesses and local seafarer unions presented close to S$1.9 million in maritime scholarships to 49 students at the MaritimeONE Scholarship Award Ceremony today. The awards ceremony was held at the Conrad Centennial Hotel.

This year, a total of 26 companies pledged their commitment to MaritimeONE scholarships valued at over S$770,000. A total of 34 MaritimeONE scholarships were awarded tonight. These companies hail from across all sectors of the industry – port, shipping, shipyards and maritime ancillary services, and pledged their support to the scholarships programme. MaritimeONE scholars are able to choose from a wide spectrum of 23 degree courses offered by local and overseas universities, as well as 3 maritime diploma programmes at the Singapore Maritime Academy (SMA) in Singapore Polytechnic (SP).

Since 2007, a total of 342 MaritimeONE scholarships worth over S$9 million have been awarded to outstanding students to pursue courses locally and abroad, emphasizing the commitment towards manpower development on the industry level.

MaritimeONE Scholarship Programme

2018 Jurong Port – MaritimeONE Scholar, Mr Hor Zhi An: The first student with a background in Business Analytics to be awarded the MaritimeONE Scholarship

Mr Hor Zhi An is a final year student pursuing a degree in Business (Business Analytics) at Nanyang Technological University. Zhi An took the long road and an unconventional educational pathway through the Normal Academic stream and Polytechnic to his current course of study at Nanyang Technological University. Zhi An knows that the secret to getting ahead is getting started. As the industry gears up for greater incorporation of technology to maritime operations, Zhi An’s skills will be essential when developing business analytical solutions for greater port efficiency.

He shares “I took and somewhat unconventional route to University, studying in the Normal Academic stream for five years, then entering Polytechnic for three years, before embarking on my three year degree in NTU. It’s hasn’t been a smooth sailing journey in achieving excellence in my academics, but I hope to continue this journey with an exciting career in maritime. With the digital transformation occurring in maritime, I hope my background in Business Analytics can contribute to the continuous development of the industry.”

2018 LCH Lockton - MaritimeONE Scholar, Ms Hazel Tan: Finding security in the road less travelled

New recipient, Ms Hazel Tan, will be pursuing a degree in Maritime Studies at the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) this year. While most students select a maritime related education to differentiate themselves from their peers, Hazel found security in the course’s unique combination (business and maritime). Well-equipped with a Diploma in Logistics and Operations Management from Temasek Polytechnic, Hazel decided that exploring adjacent fields relating to the wider supply chain network would provide her with a comprehensive view of the transportation sector in Singapore.

Hazel shares, “The business part of maritime made a lot of sense to me, so I didn’t want to pursue something entirely different upon graduating from polytechnic. As a camp instructor, I often meet and work with people from across all backgrounds, and maritime is no different! As an international maritime centre, Singapore is a melting pot of cultures, a place where businesses from all over the world gather and transact, and I’m excited about the people and places my career will lead me to.”

2018 BW Maritime – MaritimeONE Scholar, Mr Rayakar Aditya Ajeet: Seeking an adventure in maritime

Mr Aditya Rayakar, a third year student from the Singapore Management University (SMU), received the BW Maritime – MaritimeONE scholarship this year, and will be pursuing an Economics major under the Maritime Economics Track and Operations Management. Aditya’s family often travelled to new places due to his father’s vocation, which resulted in Aditya developing a love for exploring the world. When it was time to choose a degree to pursue, Aditya knew that he wanted a career that would take him places beyond the borders of Singapore, and found his calling in maritime.

He shares, “I love to go beyond my comfort zone because that’s when you get the most inspiring and enriching experiences. I decided to enter the maritime industry because it’s a highly globalised one, so you get connected to different places and meet different people. I’m excited to visit different ports around the world, and see what I can do which would help benefit these countries, with the knowledge and experience gained from living in one of the world’s most successful port cities.”

2018 SMA – MaritimeONE Scholar, Ms Siti Shamilah: The art and science of shipbuilding

New recipient, Ms Siti Shamilah, received the SMA – MaritimeONE Scholarship at the ceremony tonight. As a budding artist and videographer, Siti enjoys the design process and has developed a keen eye for detail. With her relatives in maritime, Siti often hears stories about their experiences, which sparked her interest in the industry – namely, ships, their form and function. Having previously attained a Diploma in Maritime Business from SP, it did not take much for Siti to map her educational pathway and pursue a Degree in Engineering with a specialisation in Naval Architecture at Newcastle University (Singapore Institute of Technology joint-degree programme).

She shares, “I’ve always been fascinated by ships, at how numerous parts could come together so seamlessly to form something so large and complex. Now that I have good knowledge of the maritime business and workings on the industry, further honing my skills in naval architecture would allow me to be involved in the design process, something which I can’t wait to begin learning about.”

Tripartite Maritime Scholarship Scheme (TMSS)

A total of 15 TMSS scholarships valued at about S$1.1 million, were also awarded at the ceremony this evening. These scholarships are for students who are enrolled in the Nautical Studies and Marine Engineering diploma programmes offered at the SMA in SP.

TMSS is jointly sponsored by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), shipping companies, the Singapore Maritime Officers’ Union (SMOU) and the Singapore Organisation of Seamen (SOS). The scholarship aims to groom promising students to become Ship Captains and Chief Engineers of ocean-going merchant ships and future leaders of Singapore’s maritime industry. This year, the sponsoring companies are NYK Shipmanagement Pte Ltd., PACC Ship Managers Pte Ltd, Pacific International Lines (Pte) Ltd, Sea Consortium Pte Ltd (X-PRESS FEEDERS), and Thome Ship Management Pte Ltd, with Synergy Marine Pte Ltd. coming onboard as a new sponsor for the first time.

2018 TMSS Scholar Ms Pournami Sharma: Realising ambition to be ship captain through a structured programme

Ms Pournami Sharma was awarded the TMSS Scholarship for a Diploma in Nautical Studies with Synergy Marine Pte Ltd. Harbouring the ambition to be a Ship Captain, Pournami has always been driven to pursue a career that can challenge her physical limitations and offers her multiple pathways to achieve her ambition. “This scholarship provides a structured career progression, giving me the confidence that if I continue working hard, I will be able to reach my dream of commanding a ship in time to come,” said the TMSS scholar.

2018 TMSS Scholar Mr Lee Cong Wei Berwyn: Keeping ships functional while seeing the world

Mr Berwyn Lee has been awarded the TMSS scholarship with PACC. Berwyn did well for his GCE ‘O’ Levels to qualify for junior college but chose to pursue a Diploma in Marine Engineering as he had strong interest in the maritime industry and aspired to be a chief engineer. Thrilled to have a rewarding career while travelling around the world, Berwyn said “The TMSS gives me a head start in my seafaring career as I will gain on-the-job experience with my sponsoring company while pursuing my diploma. I love the added benefit that I am able to see the world and have the opportunity to interact with different cultures, for work and leisure.”

2010 TMSS Scholar Mr Abdul Rahmad bin Abdul Razak: 8 years on, and progressing well in his career through skills deepening

Mr Abdul Rahmad bin Abdul Razak was awarded the TMSS scholarship in 2010 to pursue his Diploma in Nautical Studies in SP. Since then, he has obtained his diploma and his Certificate of Competency (CoC) Deck Officer Class 3, completed his National Service and sailed at sea for 12 months with his sponsoring company PACC Ship Managers Pte Ltd (PACC). The 12 months of sailing experience qualified him to be enrolled in the CoC Class 1 and 2 Deck Officer Course at the SMA, which he is currently pursuing. In less than a decade, he has steadily progressed from being a student to a cadet, a Fourth Officer and is now a Third Officer.

Sharing his experience, Abdul Rahmad said, “While it is quite challenging to learn so many things in the 6-month CoC Class 1 and 2 Deck Officer course, my sponsor company, PACC, has been supportive in my sailing schedule to cater for my studies and seniors have encouraging and helpful in sharing their experiences and knowledge. The journey may be tough, but it will be worth it as my seafaring experience is not only in high demand, it also opens up diverse opportunities and career options to me. ”

Inaugural MSC Maritime Digital Challenge Grand Finals Prize Presentation

Over 129 tertiary students across 35 teams took part in the inaugural MSC Maritime Digital Challenge that seeks to plug Singapore students with a passion for technology into the maritime industry.
Students from the Singapore Management University and Nanyang Polytechnic were announced as winners of the challenges posed by Eastport Maritime, Kanda and Torvald Klaveness at the Prize Presentation held on 13 November 2021.

SMF New Year Conversations 2022: Opportunities Amid Disruptions

Mr. Lars Kastrup

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER, PACIFIC INTERNATIONAL LINES

Mr. Lars Kastrup is the Chief Executive Officer of Pacific International Lines (Pte) Ltd (PIL).

Prior to joining PIL, Mr. Kastrup was CEO of NOL/APL, and subsequently assumed the role of Executive Vice President, Strategy and M&A at CMA CGM Group. A veteran in the global shipping industry with over 30 years of experience, Mr Kastrup’s other roles include Executive Vice President of Assets at CMA CGM Group heading up CMA Terminals, CMA Ships, Container Logistics as well as regional carriers such as MacAndrews, OPDR and Mercosul; as well as Vice President at AP Moller-Maersk.
Mr. Kastrup complemented his tertiary education with leadership and management training at Penn State University and The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

Ms. Angeline Teo

MANAGING DIRECTOR & HEAD, GLOBAL TRANSPORTATION & OFFSHORE, OCBC BANK

Ms. Angeline Teo is the Managing Director and Head of Global Transportation and Offshore, Global Corporate Banking at OCBC Bank which focuses on the maritime, aviation, land & port ecosystems.
Ms. Teo has spent over three decades in maritime finance. Prior to OCBC, Ms. Teo was working at ING Bank, ABN Amro and DnB in Singapore focusing on maritime and offshore.
Ms. Teo graduated from the National University of Singapore with a degree in Business Administration.

Mr. John Martin

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER, GARD SINGAPORE

Mr. John Martin began his career in London in 1989 with Richards Hogg Lindley Average Adjusters, and qualified as a Fellow of the UK Association of Average Adjusters in 2000.
At RHL he worked in their offices in Australia, Taiwan and Hong Kong. In 2003 he joined Gard Hong Kong, as a claims handler. Mr. Martin also worked in Gard Japan, and in 2014 he moved to Singapore to set up the Gard Singapore office.
Besides running Gard Singapore, Mr. Martin also heads the P&I and H&M claims units and is the Senior Claims Representative for Gard in Asia.

Mr. Cyril Ducau

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER, EASTERN PACIFIC SHIPPING

Mr. Cyril Ducau is the Chief Executive Officer of Eastern Pacific Shipping Pte Ltd, a leading shipping company headquartered in Singapore for the past 30 years.

He is also currently the Chairman of Kenon Holdings Ltd and a member of the board of directors of Gard P&I (Bermuda) Ltd. and of the Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation Limited, which was established by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore. He was previously Head of Business Development of Quantum Pacific Advisory Limited in London from 2008 to 2012 and acted as Director and Chairman of Pacific Drilling SA between 2011 and 2018.
Prior to joining Quantum Pacific Advisory Limited, Mr. Ducau was Vice President in the Investment Banking Division of Morgan Stanley & Co. International Ltd. in London between 2000 and 2008.
Mr. Ducau graduated from ESCP Europe Business School (Paris, Oxford, Berlin) and holds a Master of Science in business administration and a Diplom Kaufmann.
