59 Students Awarded with more than S$2.3 Million in Maritime Scholarships for Local & Overseas Studies

More than S$2.3 million in maritime scholarships were awarded to 59 students at the MaritimeONE Scholarship Awards Ceremony today. This was part of the maritime industry’s collective efforts to develop the pipeline of talent into the industry. The MaritimeONE Scholarship1 and Tripartite Maritime Scholarship (TMSS) were presented by the the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, maritime businesses, local seafarer unions and the Singapore Polytechnic (SP) at the Conrad Centennial Hotel.

MaritimeONE Scholarship

This year, a total of 42 MaritimeONE scholarships were awarded by 19 companies, with a total scholarship amount valued at over S$1 million. These sponsoring companies hail from all sectors of the maritime industry – port, shipping, maritime services, shipyards as well as an institute of higher learning.

MaritimeONE scholars are able to choose from a spectrum of 34 degree courses across maritime and non-maritime subjects offered by local and overseas universities, as well as three maritime diploma programmes at the Singapore Maritime Academy (SMA) in SP.

Since 2007, a total of 384 MaritimeONE scholarships worth more than S$10 million have been awarded to outstanding students to pursue courses locally and abroad.

2019 Jurong Port – MaritimeONE Scholar, Mr Neo Boon Hock: The first student with a background in Industry and Systems Engineering awarded the MaritimeONE scholarship

Mr Neo Boon Hock, is a second year student pursuing a degree in Industry and Systems Engineering at the National University of Singapore this year. While most of his peers intend to seek careers in logistics or supply chain management, Boon Hock differentiated himself by embarking on a path into the maritime industry.

Boon Hock shares, “When I heard that the maritime industry was undergoing a digital shift, with an increasing focus on the optimisation of its processes and equipment, my interest was piqued, as I realised the multiple opportunities for people like myself to contribute to such a significant industry – an industry that is responsible for the transportation of more than 80per cent of international trade. I can’t wait to be involved in new projects that will bring the maritime industry forward.”

2019 PSA – MaritimeONE Scholar, Ms Or Yi Ning: Charting Her Maritime Journey in a Digital Age

Ms Or Yi Ning, a first year student at the Nanyang Technological University (NTU), will be pursuing a double degree in Engineering (Computer Science) and Business (Business Analytics). Impressed by the diversity of the maritime industry and its great potential, Yi Ning decided to join the industry and intends to marry both her skills in digitalisation and analytics to contribute to the success of Maritime Singapore.

She shares, “I’ve always been fascinated by the maritime industry, at how it adapts and evolves, especially in the era of digitalisation. The incorporation of automation and new technologies will bring an increased flow of data, which can be analysed and translated into insights that drive efficiency and productivity. I hope to apply what I’ve learnt, and front the industry’s digitalisation efforts one day.”

2019 “K” Line – MaritimeONE Scholar, Muhammad Fahrur Razi: Problem-Solving in a Dynamic Industry

Mr Muhammad Fahrur Razi is a first year student pursuing a Bachelor of Science (Maritime Studies) at NTU. During his time with the Police Coast Guard, Fahrur had the opportunity to board large vessels during inspections, which sparked his interest in the maritime industry – especially in the way vessels operated; from the handling of cargo to the management of the crew. As someone who enjoys learning on how things work, Fahrur decided to pursue a Degree in Maritime Studies and hopes to oversee the operations of a vessel one day.

He shares, “I enjoy solving problems and challenging myself, so what better place to do these than in an industry as dynamic as maritime? Now that I have a good understanding of life onboard a vessel, learning more about the various aspects of the industry would allow me to gain a deeper appreciation of the maritime ecosystem, and I’m excited to make my mark in it.”

2019 SMA – MaritimeONE Scholar, Ms Pooja Nair: Going Against All Odds - Making a Difference in the Maritime Industry

Ms Pooja Nair is a first year student pursuing a Diploma in Maritime Business at the Singapore Maritime Academy (SP). Prior to polytechnic, she took up a finance course in ITE for the first two years, before deciding to pursue a Higher Nitec in Maritime Business, despite the fact that it would delay her graduation for another year. She owes her fascination of the industry to the stories her father often told her of his experience working in the industry, which never ceases to amaze her.

She shares, “I believe that if you persevere, you can achieve anything you set your mind to. Having represented my school in Indian Classical Dance at the annual Singapore Youth Festival, we proved everyone wrong by achieving the school’s first Distinction, as we would typically clinch the Bronze medal. Similarly, my relatives tell me this industry has no future – but I hope to make a difference here, and show them that anyone can succeed in Maritime Singapore, as long as you do your best.”

Tripartite Maritime Scholarship (TMSS)2

A total of 17 TMSS scholarships valued at about S$1.3 million, were also awarded at the ceremony this evening. These scholarships are offered to students enrolled in the Nautical Studies and Marine Engineering diploma programmes at the Singapore Maritime Academy in SP.

TMSS is jointly sponsored by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), shipping companies, the Singapore Maritime Officers’ Union (SMOU) and the Singapore Organisation of Seamen (SOS). The scholarship aims to groom promising students to become Ship Captains, Chief Engineers of ocean-going merchant ships and be the future leaders of Singapore’s maritime industry. This year, sponsoring companies include Fleet Ship Management Pte Ltd, NYK Shipmanagement Pte Ltd, PACC Ship Managers Pte Ltd, Pacific International Lines Pte Ltd, Swire Pacific Offshore Operations Pte Ltd, Synergy Marine Pte Ltd and Thome Ship Management Pte Ltd.

2019 TMSS Scholar Ms Tan Chee Sim: Ambition to become a chief engineer

Ms Tan Chee Sim has been awarded the TMSS Scholarship with PACC Ship Managers Pte Ltd to pursue a Diploma in Marine Engineering. Harbouring the ambition to become a chief engineer, she said, “It has always been my aspiration to be an engineer and go out to sea. TMSS allows me to fulfil my aspiration and I will be working towards my goal of becoming a chief engineer. I feel that a TMSS scholarship with PACC Ship Managers Pte Ltd will help to develop my career as I would have the mentorship of TMSS seniors who have progressed to become captains, chief engineers and superintendents within the company.”

2019 TMSS Scholar Ms Tan Li-Jung: Seafaring as a life-long learning journey

Ms Tan Li-Jung has been awarded the TMSS Scholarship with Synergy Marine Pte Ltd for a Diploma in Marine Engineering. She has always wanted to pursue a career that gives her the opportunity to constantly learn something new, whilst at the same time, be able to provide for her family. She said, “My experience in the Diploma in Marine Engineering course has allowed me to challenge myself and expand my knowledge in every possible way, be it academically, physically or mentally. I also look forward to my seafaring days, where I can gain technical skills as an engineer and explore the world. The TMSS supports us from diploma up to Certificate of Competency Class 1, which is closely aligned with my ideal for lifelong learning. At the same time, seafaring is also a career that pays well to support my family; and the skills gained from seafaring would eventually lead to good paying shore jobs.”

2019 TMSS Scholar Mr G Guhan: Dream to travel the world

G Guhan will be awarded the TMSS scholarship with Fleet Ship Management for a Diploma in Nautical Studies at SP. Guhan is currently in his second year of study, and is excited to embark on a seafaring career. Having previously dropped out of polytechnic, Guhan eventually found his calling and re-enrolled into SP to pursue Nautical Studies.

He shares, “I love to travel, and I’m excited to embark on a career that will bring me to different places and meet many people across the world. With this scholarship, I’ll be able to pursue a long term career in maritime, and receive guidance as I embark on achieving my Certificate of Competency 1 – you don’t get these types of scholarships in other industries!”

Inaugural MSC Maritime Digital Challenge Grand Finals Prize Presentation

Over 129 tertiary students across 35 teams took part in the inaugural MSC Maritime Digital Challenge that seeks to plug Singapore students with a passion for technology into the maritime industry.
Students from the Singapore Management University and Nanyang Polytechnic were announced as winners of the challenges posed by Eastport Maritime, Kanda and Torvald Klaveness at the Prize Presentation held on 13 November 2021.

SMF New Year Conversations 2022: Opportunities Amid Disruptions

The 2022 SMF New Year Conversations that took place on 13 January 2022 was graced by Guest-of-Honour Mr S Iswaran, Minister for Transport & Minister-in-charge of Trade Relations. Over 250 industry leaders across the breadth of maritime attended physically and virtually.

Mr. Lars Kastrup

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER, PACIFIC INTERNATIONAL LINES

Mr. Lars Kastrup is the Chief Executive Officer of Pacific International Lines (Pte) Ltd (PIL).

Prior to joining PIL, Mr. Kastrup was CEO of NOL/APL, and subsequently assumed the role of Executive Vice President, Strategy and M&A at CMA CGM Group. A veteran in the global shipping industry with over 30 years of experience, Mr Kastrup’s other roles include Executive Vice President of Assets at CMA CGM Group heading up CMA Terminals, CMA Ships, Container Logistics as well as regional carriers such as MacAndrews, OPDR and Mercosul; as well as Vice President at AP Moller-Maersk.
Mr. Kastrup complemented his tertiary education with leadership and management training at Penn State University and The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

Ms. Angeline Teo

MANAGING DIRECTOR & HEAD, GLOBAL TRANSPORTATION & OFFSHORE, OCBC BANK

Ms. Angeline Teo is the Managing Director and Head of Global Transportation and Offshore, Global Corporate Banking at OCBC Bank which focuses on the maritime, aviation, land & port ecosystems.
Ms. Teo has spent over three decades in maritime finance. Prior to OCBC, Ms. Teo was working at ING Bank, ABN Amro and DnB in Singapore focusing on maritime and offshore.
Ms. Teo graduated from the National University of Singapore with a degree in Business Administration.

Mr. John Martin

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER, GARD SINGAPORE

Mr. John Martin began his career in London in 1989 with Richards Hogg Lindley Average Adjusters, and qualified as a Fellow of the UK Association of Average Adjusters in 2000.
At RHL he worked in their offices in Australia, Taiwan and Hong Kong. In 2003 he joined Gard Hong Kong, as a claims handler. Mr. Martin also worked in Gard Japan, and in 2014 he moved to Singapore to set up the Gard Singapore office.
Besides running Gard Singapore, Mr. Martin also heads the P&I and H&M claims units and is the Senior Claims Representative for Gard in Asia.

Mr. Cyril Ducau

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER, EASTERN PACIFIC SHIPPING

Mr. Cyril Ducau is the Chief Executive Officer of Eastern Pacific Shipping Pte Ltd, a leading shipping company headquartered in Singapore for the past 30 years.

He is also currently the Chairman of Kenon Holdings Ltd and a member of the board of directors of Gard P&I (Bermuda) Ltd. and of the Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation Limited, which was established by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore. He was previously Head of Business Development of Quantum Pacific Advisory Limited in London from 2008 to 2012 and acted as Director and Chairman of Pacific Drilling SA between 2011 and 2018.
Prior to joining Quantum Pacific Advisory Limited, Mr. Ducau was Vice President in the Investment Banking Division of Morgan Stanley & Co. International Ltd. in London between 2000 and 2008.
Mr. Ducau graduated from ESCP Europe Business School (Paris, Oxford, Berlin) and holds a Master of Science in business administration and a Diplom Kaufmann.
