MaritimeONE Video Challenge with Singapore Polytechnic
The maritime industry is not just overalls and shipyards and maritime careers are certainly not boring, but some youth still think otherwise.

To hype up the “glamour” factor of maritime industry and maritime careers, Singapore Maritime Foundation (SMF) embarked on an experimental partnership with Singapore Polytechnic (SP) – to tell the maritime story through the eyes of youth through film.

105 first-year film students from the School of Communications, Arts and Social Sciences were tasked to create their very own maritime commercials as part of their classroom assignment. These students were actively involved from the initial conceptualisation, preparation of the storyboard to the actual filming, editing and presentation, so as to gain a better understanding of maritime careers in the process.

Of the 20 film submissions, five most outstanding students’ video works were featured on STOMP website as part of a six-week online marketing campaign, The MaritimeONE Video Challenge – People’s Choice. Members of the public could view these works and vote for their favourite maritime commercial. The online campaign drew thousands of votes and four lucky voters were awarded attractive prizes.

On 21 April, over 200 students and maritime partners attended the screening and judging session at SP. Students shared their behind-the-scenes anecdotes with the judging panel before the latter crowned the best group’s video presentation. The winning team also walked away with $500 cash prize.

The judging panel which included Mr David Chin, Executive Director of SMF, Regina Lim, Manager, IMC Capability Development of Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore and Mr Kym Campbell, Lecturer, Division of Broadcast and Cinema Studies of Wee Kim Wee School of Communications and Information, Nanyang Technological University, were highly impressed by the creativity of these students. SMF hopes to incorporate some of the outstanding film works into its future publicity effort.
