Issue Ten – July 2014

The first half of 2014 has flown by and it has been an eventful time for both SMF as well as the local maritime scene. SMF’s efforts to promote the maritime industry and its varied opportunities kicked off in January with a radio campaign to reach out to “O” level graduates, and the profiling was sustained via various online, mobile and event platforms in the ensuing months.

As part of the Singapore Maritime Week this year, we also held the Sea Asia 2015 Press Briefing along with the launch reception on 7 April. The event provided industry insights ahead of the iconic maritime show for the region, slated for next year (21 - 23 April 2015).

We also organised the Offshore Marine Forum, a Sea Asia conference, from 28 to 29 May this year, as a continuation of what we started in 2013 with a full day dedicated to the offshore marine service sector. The two-day forum, co-organised with Seatrade, at Marina Bay Sands Singapore, examined a range of critical issues through discussions with industry stalwarts.

In June, SMF and the Association of Singapore Marine Industries (ASMI) led a delegation of nine maritime-related companies to the mega maritime event, Posidonia, in Athens, Greece. Mrs Josephine Teo, Senior Minister of State for Finance and Transport, officiated at the opening of the Singapore Pavilion. It was a fruitful week for the exhibitors, who took the opportunity to touch base with potential customers and reconnect with existing ones.

As we move into the second half of the year, SMF will continue to attract and nurture young talents as part of the MaritimeONE Scholarship programme. This year, I would like to thank the following sponsors for their generous contribution to the MaritimeONE scholarships.

They are “K” Line Pte Ltd, American Bureau of Shipping, Fednav Singapore Pte Ltd, Haider Nawaz, IMC Industrial Group, Jurong Port Pte Ltd, Keppel Offshore & Marine Ltd, Lloyd’s Register Foundation, M3 Marine Group Pte Ltd, NORDEN Shipping (Singapore) Pte Ltd, PSA Corporation Ltd, Sembcorp Marine Ltd, Singapore Maritime Academy - Singapore Polytechnic, Singapore Maritime Officers’ Union, Singapore Shipping Association, SMTC Global (Singapore) Pte Ltd, Swire Pacific Offshore Operations (Pte) Ltd, The China Navigation Company Pte Ltd, The Chua Chor Teck Memorial Fund, Thome Ship Management Pte Ltd and X-PRESS FEEDERS.

It is always heartening to see the local maritime community actively involved in the efforts to develop the next generation of maritime leaders. As SMF continues in our efforts to inspire and attract more young people to join this dynamic industry, we look forward to your continuous support, as always.

With best wishes,
